Where is Usquepaugh, Rhode Island?
Usquepaugh is pronounced ‘uhs-kah-pog’. What does it mean? ‘Usque’ means fire, life or spirit and ‘paugh’ means water. Just as hundreds of towns and villages are named by local Native American Indian origin, you might hear us say that Usquepaugh is somewhere between Quonochontaug and Escoheag! Although that is very true, it may be easier to explain that Usquepaugh is in the town of West Kingston, which is in South Kinsgtown, which is in South County, which is in Rhode Island. This quaint town, surrounding the Queen’s River is located off Route 138, 5 miles from Route 95 and 5 miles from the University of Rhode Island.
Parking & Directions
The old-world setting of our mill and village is not equipped with large cement slab parking lots or a parking garage to accommodate a crowd. Since our location is residential and vendors will be set up around the mill yard and usual parking spots, there will be no parking at and around the mill. Free off-site parking locations are minutes from the mill at the Washington County Fairgrounds (larger/primary lot off Route 112 on the way from Route 95) and the Richmond Antique Center (smaller lot off Route 138). Free shuttle buses from Ocean State Transit will be continuously running loops throughout the festival. The drop off will be at the picturesque Queen's River Waterfall, diagonal from the mill where there will also be vendors. For detailed directions & more information, click here or call us at 800-7-KENYON.
Is Kayaking Really Free?
Yes, kayaking on the Queen's River is free of charge during the event! It is made possible by the Queen's River Kayak Company and the Wood-Pawcatuck Watershed Association. There will be plenty of single kayaks. For those requesting a tandem/double or canoe, there may be a short wait. Kayaking is first come; first serve. There will be a safety team on the water throughout the event and someone assisting kayakers in and out of the water. Allowed trip time is about 30 minutes for singles and 20 minutes for tandems. The Wood-Pawcatuck Watershed Association will be collecting voluntary donations during the event. Consider donating! They help keep our rivers safe and clean. Mission / Sponsors & Supporters
Our events are a lot like the story of Stone Soup. At our mill, in the small village of Usquepaugh, we build a fire, add some water and put in the stones…creating a venue where local businesses can come together, join a support system, and show off what they do best! For the second year, it has been an honor to be a part of a diverse group of people who work together as a team, setting up, unloading trucks and sharing information to help promote, share and cross market the business diversity that we are blessed with in this state. This is the type of help our businesses and community needs to survive...to create an opportunity for the public and for themselves...a delicious stew in which we all can enjoy. Many local businesses and farms, both old and new, have availed themselves the opportunity to exhibit for free. The businesses listed below have gone above and beyond by providing exclusive free food and beverage samples and/or many other donations that make this charitable event possible! Special thanks to our musicians!
